The Purkiss family is a farming family from Hawkell Hall Farm near Hockley, Essex. Billy Purkiss and his dad Mick run the 620-acre arable farm, bouncing ideas and decisions off each other. And when the time came to swap their MLT735, the shift to Crawfords for its replacement Manitou was viewed by both as a welcome move.
“We used to deal with Crawfords when we ran IH tractors,” recalls Billy. “So when our 2012 MLT735 was up for replacement, we had no hesitation ordering one from Writtle.”
The Purkiss’ MLT-741-140V+ in Elite specification was the first Manitou sold by Crawfords, and also included in the deal was an Isuzu double-cab pickup in Utah specification.
“This new handler is a huge step up over our previous model,” he says. “It’s smoother, more controllable, and the cab is great, with a scalloped floor design that makes cab access so much better.”
He says the curved roof glass has improved visibility when loading lorries with grain, and the one-piece door with solid steel lower half also gets a thumbs up.
“I was sceptical about not having a fold-back stable door, but having an electric window is much better,” he says. “There’s no risk of the door getting damaged.”
Billy says the telehandler has done few hours so far, and it is early days in the relationship with its new dealer, but says so far, nothing has been too much for Crawfords.
“We’ve had a couple of small issues, but their after-sales service is excellent,” he adds. “And it’s great to feel like a valued customer.”
